How I Learned to Kill My Darlings

Oh No, I Finished the Book! Queue Panic (aka: What Now?) 📖☕

Mood: Caffeinated & Slightly Chaotic

So... you did it. You actually did the thing! You’ve got a finished manuscript sitting on your laptop, and if you’re anything like me, you’re currently oscillating between "I am a literary genius" and "This is a 300-page pile of hot garbage."

First of all: Treat yourself. Go get that overpriced latte or the fancy stickers you’ve been eyeing. Finishing a book is a huge deal, and you’re officially a rebel in my book!

But once the glitter settles, the big question looms: What on earth do we do now?

When I first started looking into self-publishing, I thought the next step was just... clicking a button? (Spoiler: It is not. My past self was so cute and naive.) Before we even think about covers or Amazon keywords, we have to talk about the "Messy Middle" phase.

Step 1: Break Up With Your Book (Temporarily!)

I know, I know. You just spent months together. But you need space! Close the doc, put the notebook in a drawer, and don't touch it for at least two weeks. You need "fresh eyes" so you can come back and see the plot holes you missed because you were too busy falling in love with your side characters.

Step 2: Read-Through and Find the Cringe

When you finally open it back up, don't fix anything yet. Just read it. You’ll find sentences that make you swoon and others that make you want to hide under your desk. That’s okay! Every cringey moment is just an opportunity to make your story shine brighter.

Step 3: Find Your Book Besties

Self-publishing sounds lonely, but it doesn't have to be. This is the perfect time to start looking for Alpha Readers! Those brave souls (usually your best friends) who will read the messiest version of your story and tell you if the ending actually makes sense.

The Rebel Secret: You don't have to be perfect to be a "real" author. You just have to be brave enough to keep going when things get a little technical and weird.

We’re going to get through this together, one chapter at a time. Stay cozy, stay rebellious, and maybe go eat a snack—you earned it! ✨

Drop a comment on my communication section: What was the hardest scene for you to write? For me, it’s always the "first meeting" (why is flirting so hard to type out?!) Stay wicked, Darlings!
